How do I enable Piper for VoiceOver on macOS?

Piper installs high-quality neural voices locally on your Mac for use with VoiceOver and other system accessibility features.

No login is required. Voice models are downloaded and stored locally on your device. Piper does not use cloud speech services and does not collect personal data.

  4. Download a voice model
  5. Open System Settings
  6. Go to Accessibility

  8. Click Open VoiceOver Utility…
  9. Select Speech
  10. Click the "+" button to add a voice
  11. Locate your installed voice under Piper
  12. Select the voice and confirm

Once selected, VoiceOver will use Piper for speech output.

On iPhone / iPad

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Accessibility
  3. Open Spoken Content or VoiceOver
  4. Open Speech / Voice
  5. Select a Piper voice

After selection, Apple accessibility features will use Piper for speech output.
